Regional autonomy for ethnic minorities in China means that, under the unified leadership of the state, regional autonomy is practiced in areas where people of ethnic minorities live in compact communities. In these areas, organs of self-government are established for the exercise of autonomy. The implementation of this policy is critical to enhancing the relationship of equality, unity and mutual assistance among different ethnic groups, to upholding national unification, and to accelerating the development of places where regional autonomy is practiced and promoting their progress.在中国，民族区域自治是指在国家的统一领导下，各少数民族聚居地方实行区域自治，设立自治机关，行使自治权。中国实行民族区域自治，对于加强各民族平等、团结、互助的关系，维护国家统一，加快民族自治地方发展，促进少数民族进步，起到了巨大的作用。
